Slab Leaks
Slab leaks happen when the plumbing beneath the concrete of your home fails and leaks, or even bursts. This particular problem develops out of sight and, if left unmitigated, will cause critical damage to your home. You can prevent excessive damage if you’re familiar with signs that you’ve got trouble beneath any of the concrete slabs of your home. Learn when to call a maintenance plumber to protect your Dallas-Fort Worth home with our slab leak detection and repair services.
What Is a Slab Leak?
It might be your basement floor, or your home may be built upon a concrete slab that was poured onto a gravel or soil surface. Soils shift, however, and eventually, that movement causes the concrete in your home’s foundation to crack. According to our maintenance plumbing experts in Dallas-Fort Worth, the pipes beneath your slab are also susceptible to that movement. They can deteriorate and fail because of excessive pressure from the movement of expansive soil. It’s also possible for the plumbing to corrode if your house is older, and for tree roots to invade rusted sections of the pipe.
Signs of a Slab Leak
Signs of damage are not always obvious, but indications of a slab leak are recognizable once detected:
- Stains and discoloration (usually brown or rust-colored) in the affected concrete
- Cracked floor tile or uplifted panels in your laminate flooring
- Puddles and/or mold growth on the slab or in unexpected places in the house
(beneath cabinets or at the base of a wall) - A significantly higher-than-usual water bill
